Elise Ansel at Cadogan Contemporary
The American painter Elise Ansel takes inspiration from Old Master paintings but translates them into her own, highly contemporary visual language. “I flip the orientation and use abstraction to interrupt a destructive narrative and transform it in to a revel of colour, movement and asymmetrical balance,” Ansel says of her strikingly textural work. By looking at masterpieces by Titian, Rubens and Delacroix through a feminine lens, she asks the viewer to look afresh at the male-dominated patterns of art history.
‘Elise Ansel: yes I said Yes’ is at Cadogan Contemporary until 18 October.
